Reminiscence:The North Borneo Railway

Hantu Laut

After having written many articles on the gloomy scenarios of the economy, goddam politics and the antics of our mostly incorrigible politicians, I think I should take a break from those dreary subjects and take a trip down memory lane, a dose of nostalgia that bring back memories of my childhood on what must be, my rendering of it, the slowest train in the world.

It would take almost a whole day of daylight to travel from what was Jesselton then to Tenom in the interior. The scenic beauty of the lust jungle, the Padas Gorge and the backdrop of the Crocker Range is just unforgettable.

The North Borneo Railway re-named Sabah State Railway has ceased operation temporarily for major tracks renewal work. For those who love the past, below is the history of the Railway from the day it started in the then British North Borneo.

In the 1880’s, the so-called “White Rajahs” of the British Crown established the British North Borneo Company by obtaining parts of North Borneo from the Sultan of Sulu. The wild jungles provided grounds for great adventure and potential riches. As the need for larger plantations grew, the question of transportation became a major issue for these young plantation owners. A railway straight into the heart of Borneo was the only viable solution to keep the company afloat.

In 1894, the Chartered Company elected William Clarke Cowie as the Managing Director of the British North Borneo Company. Cowie appointed an English Civil Engineer, Arthur J. West, to build the railway line from Bukau, north to Beaufort and south to Weston. Named after Mr. West, Weston was to be the new port at Brunei Bay. However, upon completion of the railway in 1890, Weston was discovered to be too shallow for a deep-sea wharf. Instead, Arthur J. West extended a 64 km line from Beaufort to Tenom and to Melalap where laborers, mainly Hakka and Cantonese were lured from China to undertake what was known to be the most challenging task of construction along the gorge section. In the meantime, George Pauling & Company was appointed to continue the railway from Beaufort, further 90 km to Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu). The railway was finally on the move!

North Borneo Postage StampHowever, victory did not last long, for in 1930, the Great Depression spread through the world. This threw men out of work everywhere; trade was almost halted; there was no sale of rubber and established companies collapsed. Hardly had the world recovered from this when the Second World War started in 1939. The Japanese 37 Army, under Lt. General Masao Baba occupied North Borneo. WWII and the Japanese Occupation almost paralyzed the whole railway system between 1944 and 1945. Despite severe damages, the railways continued providing its vital service to the state during the war. Locomotives continued running between bridges and “Rail Jeeps” were modified to replace damaged locomotives.

During the Post-War period, immediately after liberation of North Borneo by the 9th Division Australian Imperial Force (AIF), the British North Borneo Company faced the gigantic task of reconstruction and decided to relinquish its ownership of North Borneo to the British Colonial Office. From then on, North Borneo became a Crown Colony until Malaysian independence.

The North Borneo Railway The railway remained the only means of transportation into the interior until only half a century ago, playing a vital part in the economic development of Sabah. It helped open up the country and the emergence of towns like Bukau, Weston and Jesselton. It now continues to run through six main stations, namely Tanjung Aru, Papar, Bongawan, Beaufort and Tenom. The smaller stations are Putatan, Kinarut, Kawang, Kimanis, Lumat, Saliwangan, Halogilat, Rayoh and Pangi.

Colonial garb takes you back to yesteryearThe North Borneo Railway features a British Vulcan steam locomotive, designed and built by the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, England in 1954 as part of the last order before the factory converted to diesel and electric locomotive construction. The Vulcan 6-015, a 2-6-2 carrying a green livery with polished boiler bands and red edging to the running plate and tender frame, was de-commissioned for general use in the early 1970’s by the Sabah State Railway Department. It was proudly re-launched on January 22nd, 2000, in honour of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s capital, achieving City-Status. Not only does this steam engine represent the last of a fleet of steam engines that have plied the tracks through Borneo since the late 1800’s, it is also one of the only functional wood-burners left in the world.

Coal-powered Vulcan Steam EngineThe North Borneo Railway also features six carriages that have been meticulously restored and renovated to reflect the era of the steam train. The exterior utilizes the traditional deep green and cream of the original North Borneo Railway, with carved brass logos featuring the original British seal. The interior, highlighting the natural woods of Sabah, has comfortable seating and dining facilities. Every carriage provides the amenity of a modern washroom onboard. Seating accommodates 36 passengers per carriage, with a total train capacity of 180 passengers. An exotic bar car and observation deck accompanies the train, providing a comfortable lounge area to heighten the overall journey experience.

The Vulcan Steam Engine - the last of the greatsWindows remain open throughout the journey, and high-powered fans line the ceilings to ensure maximum comfort along the route. A provision has been made for air-conditioning, though the open windows enhance the entire heritage experience, as passengers are able to lean out the windows and doors to interact with the countryside, rather than merely be observers.

The North Borneo Railway is built and operated to the highest of international standards and is fully compliant with modern safety standards.

The nostalgic romance of an old steam train…passing through villages and coastal towns paddy fields, rainforests and plantations of rubber and coffee…

A ride on the North Borneo Railway is truly a journey of rediscovery into the heart of Borneo, transporting you back into the past; to the days of the Chartered Company…and British Colonial Office…of young Englishmen setting out to be planters in the interiors of Borneo…

The North Borneo Railway runs 36 miles between Kota Kinabalu, the state capital, and Papar, an agricultural town, known as the rice bowl of Sabah. From Tanjung Aru Station, your train, with an open observation car, travels along the main road to Putatan, a small village on the outskirts of the city. Beyond this station, the journey continues along a lovely bay dotted with mangrove swamp, protecting the coast from the South China Sea. View the fishermen waist-high in the waters collecting shrimp and small fish in these safe coastal waters.

As the train rounds the bay, it veers into the interior, leaving the main road behind as it makes its way through the countryside. Kinarut, a small kampong (village in Malay), is our first whistle-stop. Famous for its pre-war shop houses, passengers will de-board here for a quick tour of lovely Tsim Shen Tsui Temple, a temple built in honour of Mainland Chinese by the local community. It features 18 statues of Buddhist monks, a 20-foot giant smiling Buddha, and a lotus-pond in honour of Kwan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.

Back onboard, enjoy the journey, surrounded by mangrove swamps and acres of Nepa Palm and Screw Pines. This swamp region is vital for the local community, as villagers collect the Nepa fronds to make baskets and mats, as well as the atap roofs for their houses. The area is also rich with fish and prawn, as mangrove regions are tidal. Local villagers travel through the swamps on little dugout canoes, painted in bright greens and blues.

The train then passes through a deep mountain tunnel, the sole tunnel along the entire route from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom, in the heart of the interior. As it emerges on the other side, the landscape changes dramatically from swampland to padi field. Watch as the farmers toil away in the fields, harvesting Sabah’s favorite crop. Water buffalo dot the fields, many with perched egrets on their shoulders, highlighting the pairs symbiotic friendship.

The train then enters Papar town, crossing a bright yellow trestle bridge over the Papar River. Blue, yellow and red fishing boats dot the river’s edge, docked to bring the day’s catch to the vast fish market in town. The train steams into town, met by waiving locals. In Papar, the Vulcan engine refills with water and utilizes a turn-table to reverse for the return journey into the heart of Borneo.

Malaysian Economy:A Gloom On The Horizon

Hantu Laut

The Prime Minister or Finance Minister should have tabled it in Parliament and seek the approval of majority of the house.Government should act more responsibly and not used taxpayers money, foreign exchange reserves and pension funds for bailout purposes without getting the approval of Parliament.Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had asked for it to be debated in Parliament.

The American Administration is an example of transparency and responsible behaviour. It goes to Congress to get approval for the bailout. The President could not simply decide on his own without Congress approval as the bailout involved public funds.

Using the fund to prop up shares of certain companies on the KLSE may not be a good idea under the current market conditions. The market have not hit rock bottom yet.Further declines are expected.A free fall should not be ruled out as and when companies start to announce their year end financial results.

The Composite Index has shedded over 40% of its value from its peak in January this year and the bottom is not yet in sight. The fear of global recession will drive stocks all over the globe further down and Malaysia will not be isolated from the movement on Wall Street and other markets. To say we are insulated from the effect of the global recession is misleading and totally irresponsible. Most sensible governments would brace themselves for the worst and inform its citizens of the bad times to come.

The situation is actually much more serious than what the government made it out to be and saving some selected companies on the KLSE should not be a priority.Foreign investors and funds managers are not stupid to place money in our stocks if they see weak fundamentals and an economy heading for a tailspin.

With substantial loss of revenue from falling prices of crude oil the bottom line for Petronas is likely to move into the red zone if the price of crude falls below US$50 per barrel. Its cost of production would be around that region.

OPEC has seldom been effective at controlling prices, often referred to as a cartel, it does not justify the definition. There is no cohesiveness among members to adhere strictly to production quotas. The cut in production of 1.5 barrel per day starting in November seems to have no effect in stabilising prices.Nigeria has objected to production cut citing heavy reliance on crude oil for the country's budget.

OPEC Production 1990-2007 OPEC Production 1990-2005

In the event Petronas have to sell its crude at a loss than it should consider trimming its domestic production and keep the oil in the ground and concentrates on those of its overseas operations that have lower costs of production.

The other equally serious erosion of source of income is the oil palm industry.Price has nosedived to a low of RM1390 on the futures market with the short and long term prospect looking rather bearish.

Another bad news for the palm oil industry is China expected bumper harvest of its soybean. Some Chinese buyers have defaulted on their contracts with Malaysian companies and some are re-negotiating prices downward on their outstanding contracts.Prices are expected to slide further down. Some plantations may have to shut down production if prices fall below their costs of production. There would be major unemployment coming out of this industry if prices continue to fall. The government should remove all cess or duties on palm oil and palm oil products immediately to ease the burden.

With the big drop in export due to falling prices and declining demands overseas the forecasted growth rate next year would have to be revised to a more sensible level to keep in line with prevailing economic situation. The projected rate of 5.4% may not be achievable.

There would be significant increase in non-performing loans(NPL) and business failures.

Reduced corporate profits or losses would mean less income taxes going into government coffers, which among other things, would affect the government budget.New sources of funding would have to be found to finance the budget.Unless there is sudden upswing to the current gloomy global conditions the general economy will face serious contraction in the next few months which would affect the value of the ringgit. The ringgit may be traded at 3.80 to 4.00 range by 1st Quarter 2009 if no viable solution is found to stimulate growth.

Now that oil price has gone down substantially the prices of consumers goods have not come down and would not go down if there were no interference from the government to stop traders from profiteering. The only fast solution to bring down those prices is to bring down the price of petrol and diesel as quickly as possible.

By now the government should have a plan on how to combat the adverse effects of the global recession, somehow, there seems to be none so far.

It would be advisable to abandon the plan to prop up the shares market and set aside the money as contingency for other emergency uses should the need arises.

The next few months will see how precarious the problems would be.

Below is an extract from an article in Bernama on 25th October:
The situation has clearly made all countries vulnerable including Malaysia, an analyst said. "Eventhough the domestic economy is still strong and not expected to go into recession, foreign portfolio funds have continued to flow out to meet redemption by the investors in their respective home base.
It is economist and analyst like this that the government like to listen to.

It appears the leaders are more concerned with the UMNO Elections and spent more time jockeying for positions in the party rather than spending time to call for emergency sessions to find ways and means to shelter the nation from what would probably be the worst recessions in many decades.

The solution would be to bring the UMNO party elections back to December and be done with it so those taking the helm can get down to business of running a nation.

Note:I have earlier written this article under inappropriate title.I have added new features and updated some of the contents.I would call it re-branding and is what exactly our government need to do to get back the people's trust. They need to re-invent and re-branding.

Meet The Taliban Of America

Hantu Laut

In Afghanistan, the Talibans are well known for their religious fanatism.Their purist's version of Islam can send shivers to your bones.

The word 'taliban' means 'students' in Pashto, the Pashtun language, a branch of the Indo-European language. The Talibans think of themselves as the purists in Islam with strict adherence to its pure and original form. They enforced compliance with severe punishments. They are God's judges, jurors and executioners.

That's in Afghanistan where the Talibans have made a come back and soon will drive the American out of Afghanistan as they did to the Russian and before that the British in the Anglo-Afghan Wars.

For a change, I would like you all to meet the other kind of Talibans, the American Talibans.

Call it a gaffe, paus fax or slip of the tongue if you like but it shows the true racist and bigoted nature of these 'talibans' of modern America. These gaffe type, that what they called it when they say it, and other white supremacists group including the Ku Klux Klan which still has small pockets of member scattered all over the country would definitely vote for John McCain, another racist white supremacist.

When former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad said the Jews used proxies to fight their wars, there were huge uproar in the West by these bigots. They called Mahathir 'pariah of the world'. Saying things like that had become their form of entertainment and it is called gaffe or paus fax and not racism or bigotry.

I would call it "shit full of racism, intolerance and shitty sense of superiority".

Masters Of War II

Hantu Laut

The 'Masters Of War' is at it again.

"I don't think that witchcraft is a religion. I wish the military would rethink this decision."

"God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

"Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

"This crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take a while."

George W.Bush

U.S. military helicopters launched an attack on Syrian territory close to the border with Iraq, killing eight people.A U.S. military official said the raid targeted the network of al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters moving through Syria into Iraq.

Would few and scattered bombings here and there on a neighbouring country stop the flow of foreign fighters into Iraq.Wouldn't policing the border and tighter border control makes more sense than bombing other sovereign nation and killing innocent lives. It goes to show the arrogance and total disregard of innocent human lives by the US Administration under the moronic George Bush, a man whose total lack of knowledge of the outside world outside America had made him quixotic and a menace to the world. He sees enemies, mostly imagined, in every Arab and Muslim nations after 9/11.His foreign policy is all about flexing muscles and gunboat diplomacy. If those options were not used than economic sanctions would be the tool of choice which the moron in the 'White House' knew very well would make the ordinary people suffered the most. The leaders of the country concerned would not suffer because with power they have access to money and other luxuries. Is America a true democracy or a fascist military regime?

The ways it goes about with its foreign policies there is little doubt that it is definitely practising double standards when dealing with other countries especially non- Occidental countries.Even worse if they are Muslims nations.

It has pointed its guns at North Korea and Iran under the pretext of trying to stop nuclear proliferation. These are small nations with inadequate military capability which it deems fit to bully.Would it dares to point it guns at the bigger power like China or Russia ?

The Korean nuclear standoff has become a high-stakes game, where the threats are potentially more dangerous than those posed by Iraq and now Iran.It is suspected to have at least one or more nuclear weapon, an extensive chemical weapons stockpile and a biological arsenal.A full scale military or nuclear strike by North Korea would be devastating to American troops in Japan and South Korean , which is the US main concern. It wouldn't care less what would happen to the population of these two countries as long as American interests are protected. It has recently toned down its military harangue against North Korea.

Like North Korea it has taken issue with Iran on its nuclear programme. The American suspected that Iran is technically capable of producing enough HEU(highly enriched uranium) toward the making of nuclear bombs.Iran has refuted the claim and said its nuclear programme are for peaceful purposes. An IAEA inspections have shown that Iran have not produced sufficient HEU for military purposes. Another IAEA report stated "there is no evidence that the previously undeclared nuclear material and activities ... were related to a nuclear weapons programme."

Iran has claimed that the military threat posed by Israel and the United States is forcing it to restrict the release of information on its nuclear programme.

Unconvinced, the US pressured the UN Security Council to pass sanctions against Iran.On 31 July 2006 the Security Council passed a resolution demanding Iran suspend its enrichment program. On 23 December 2006, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions against Iran for refusal to stop its uranium enrichment programme.

The recent unprovoked strike against Syria is to send a warning to Iran that it would face serious military action if it continues with its nuclear programme.

There is a 50/50 chance that the US will, directly or through its ally and proxy in the Middle East, Israel mount air strikes against Iran in the next few months. The military action would mainly be confined to aerial bombings of military installations but with tragic results on human lives.
