Pakistan: A Failed State ?

Hantu Laut

Former Pakistan Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated just days before Pakistan parliamentary election.

A sad and tragic end to another famous political family.Like the Kennedys and Ghandis, she has seen tragic and turbulent years and eventually met a violent end herself.

Her father was toppled from power and hanged by the man who grabbed power from him.She was ousted from power twice with allegations of corruption and abuse of power. Her husband was sent to prison for corruption. One brother died under suspicious circumstances, suspected of being murdered, in his home in Paris.Another brother was assassinated while on a political campaign trail in Pakistan.Benazir, undaunted, continue the fight to save Pakistan from the militants. She paid it with her life, adding another chapter to Islamic militancy and madness.

Will her children pursue the same course like she did after father ?

The end of another cursed political dynasty. What's next for Pakistan ?

May her soul rest in peace and those who murdered her burned in hell.

Hantu Laut,

May her soul rest in peace.
As for Pakistan it's getting from bad to worse!
When Pakistan & India separated, both countries had equal chances to progress & develop. After all both come from the same "stock".
India chose the secular way (despite being predominantly Hindu) but Pakistan chose the Extremeist Islamic way. See what has happened?
What really scares me the most is that India & Pakistan reminds me of Singapore & Malaysia!
One (guess who) is racing towards abundance, development & greatness & the other is racing towards Extremeism (guess who) and disaster!

SM,
Pakistan has taken the precipitous road to destruction. The misguided Islamic teachings has left major part of the population in the medieval age.

The biggest worry now is, if the militants took over, which they eventually will if they are not destroyed now, how to secure the nuclear arsenal and remove it to safety, before those mad men can lay their hands on it.

Don't underestimate their madness, I believe they are prepared to use it.

Malaysia is still quite far from that form of militancy, but there are perturbing signs that we are heading in that direction. It still can be corrected, if the government wanted to.

Hantu Laut,

Yes, I agree with you.
Malaysia for the moment is still far away from what Pakistan has become. However, our Govt. seems to be heading the same way.
The signs do not show that they are in any hurry to do otherwise!

Al-Fatihah to the one brave, gutsy lady. She knew what her return entailed but even she didn't see it coming...

You ask if Pakistan is a "failed state"? It wasn't then but started to fail after 9/11 when Bush started using Iran as a staging area in the hunt for Ben Laden. It had only one consequence: fuelling the militants. It's a good thing that Pakistan is under military control because it's hard for 'militants' to penetrate the military, especially with ISI around. I'm sure India would not just stand idly by either.

Let's hope that common sense will prevail, but extremist don't use common sense do they?

Mat Salo,
Yes, it's true, the Bush administration was greatly responsible for the heightened terrorist activities in Pakistan.Using Pakistan as a staging point to deal with the terror groups in Afghanistan had backfired. Actually the cocky and ignorant Bush was the one who brought them into Pakistan. The terrorists see Musharraf's government as a devil that have made a pact with another bigger devil, the infidels. They see the fight as against Islam and a religious war.

How do you fight this kind of madness?
