Disposable Zaid Ibrahim

Hantu Laut

Malaysian politicians never stopped to amaze me, from the sublime to the ridiculous, some with amusing anecdotal concoction.

Former de facto Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim was sacked from UMNO for going against party's code of ethics. He attended DAP victory dinner in Penang and PKR's annual national congress.

The irony is Zaid said he didn't expect to be sacked. That certainly is not an honest true to God statement. The reason he went to the functions of the two opposition parties is because he wanted to be sacked and he knew he would be sacked. Not being an elected member (MP or ADUN) he is not an asset to UMNO and is highly disposable. He should know that better than any one else and stop pretending he is only going there to visit friends and expect to get a pat on the back from his party.

Yong Teck Lee of SAPP tried the same formula but Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi refused to sack his party from the BN because he has assets in the name of 2 MPs and 4 state assemblymen with him.He eventually pulled his party out of the BN and is now aligned with Anwar's Pakatan Rakyat.

In more developed society and matured democracies it is honourable to resign than being sacked but in Malaysia it seems to be the other way round, being sacked from a political party brings prestige and seen as something heroic.

I think it sucks, if it's against your principle and you called yourself a lawyer and a gentleman, don't leave in a huff, leave like a man, a gentleman.

HL,

Yes, Zaid should have just resigned. However, please remember he was gentleman enough to resign his Ministerial post.
I think what he did was smart. By allowing UMNO to sack him, he is now free to do whatever he wants, without being called a traitor. After all they have alreday said he has betrayed his race anyway!
Pak Lah knew long ago that Zaid was "different". Pak Lah was probably hoping to "convert" him by making him a Minister. It did not work.
I don't understand why you are wasting your time "critizing" Zaid. All you need to do is compare Zaid with any UMNO Minister or MP & you will see the difference. Do you love UMNO so much that anyone who goes against them is granted a critical review?
But then again, I may be worng, after all if you wanted to critize UMNO, you would not have the time or place to do anything else as there will be too much "dirt" (I can think of worse words but I always try to be a Gentleman like Zaid! Hahahaha)to uncover!

In a developed society and matured democracy, it wouldn't be an issue in the first place.

He wasn't a speaker at either function, just a guest.

Sacking him just exposes UMNO as the narrow-minded, extremist party it has become.

I think UMNO overreacted, if Zaid is really a nobody, they won't even bother sacking him.....

Just as an example, Obama appointed Robert Gates, a Bush appointee and a Republican to his cabinet. And I didn't hear Republicans screaming "traitor !"

America has many flaws, too, but that's what I call a "matured democracy".

sm,

That's not a fair assumptions you are making,I have also been critical of those in UMNO including the Prime Minister and his cabinet ministers.

I am already very comfortable,I don't need to suck up to any politicians for my livelihood and if I support someone it comes from my heart and if I don't it also comes from my heart.

Many Malaysians have a shallow idea and tendency to believe that if you support the government you are getting financial benefits from them.

I still believe Zaid should have resigned instead of getting himself sacked.

Anyway,it's no skin off my nose.

Jed Yoong,

That's what I said.Zaid is nobody that's why they sacked him.If he is an MP, you bet he wouldn't be sacked that fast.
