SABAH AND SARAWAK SAVED PAK LAH

Hantu Laut

First of all I would like to apologise for not being able to update the election results last night as my internet connection was down.

The results has been one beyond expectations. A resounding victory for the oppositions and a new era for Malaysia. The people have spoken, the need for change by denying the BN two-thirds majority, which I have always espouse would be the best mechanism for check and balance of a corrupt regime.

The fall of the state government in Penang was expected but Selangor, Perak and Kedah was a shocker, an outcome that even the oppositions didn't expect.

This is a wake-up call for UMNO to stop taking the people for granted and stop marginalisation of ethnic minority races in the country. The poor showing is also a message that the people have had enough of corruptions and abuses of power. Losing five states in the Peninsula to the oppositions has made Pak Lah the only prime minister that have brought UMNO to its lowest level of support since its inception. He has also helped to kill MCA, MIC and Gerakan, the biggest trashing they ever had.

UMNO would have lost the federal government if not for Sabah and Sarawak. The excellent performance of the Sabah BN was another surprise. The politics of Anwar Ibrahim has not caught up with the people in Sabah and Sarawak. His party, PKR didn't win a single seat in Sabah and Sarawak.

The outstanding performance of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman who was rumored to be replaced many times before is par excellence, delivered almost 100 percent of the state and parliamentary seats, he lost only 1 state and 1 parliamentary seats. Almost all candidates won with strong majority.

In the Peninsula the only strong showing was in two states, Johor and Pahang. The DPM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak won overwhelmingly with a massive of 24,464 majority.

The state that sprung a surprise for the BN was Trengganu capturing 8 parliamentary and 23 state seats. Many have predicted a strong comeback from PAS.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi won his Kepala Batas parliamentary seat with reduced majority. He collected only 11,246 majority compared to 18,122 in 2004. It is unthinkable that a prime minister can lose his own state. What can of grassroots has he got if he can't even get his own state to back him. Former prime minister Tun Mahathir will have a field day tomorrow.

In view of the poor showing and by convention Badawi should step aside and hand over the prime ministership to Najib. Ministers like Rafidah Aziz and Hishamuddin Tun Hussein should also be dropped from the cabinet. The APs and keris issues had done untold damage to UMNO's support from the big minority groups, namely the Chinese and Indians in the country. It has also eroded the Malays support for the party.

It would be perilous for UMNO if Badawi continued as prime minister.

Sabah has always been somewhat insulated from the politics in Peninsula. It's both a good and bad thing. Showings by voters in Sabah wass also quite weak. I was a little bit surprised by the results; at least the Sandakan parliamentary seat was very close. Oh, well...

Supa,

It's true Sabah is like an island by itself. What's just happened in Peninsula was quite common in Sabah before until UMNO came.Sabahans have been known to have thrown out government that didn't measure up.

The results in Sabah was as shocking as the political tsunami in the Peninsula. Many pundits expect PKR and DAP to take more seats in Sabah.

HL,

Money talks in Sabah!
Yes, Sabah & Sarawak saved Pak Lah.
This is what we have been talking about for some time now. Deny them the 2/3rds majority so they will get a very clear message that Malaysians are fed-up!
I do not know what the Vote Ratio is but I bet it's clearly around 50% BN to 50% Opposition.
Pak Lah actually has a good excuse to get rid of the "trash" around him now.
So far all they are saying is that they will consolidate & they will return & they will keep working for the people. They should know that the people are fed-up of the rampant corruption in the BN.
THe MCA, MIC & Gerakan are completely decimated. This in itself is not so bad. They can now start "anew".
Let's hope his "big ears" do start listening now at last.
He has to do something soon or he is history! The shartks will start circling now.

HL,
Sabah and Sarawak got the message from the peninsula now that it is OK to change a non performing government sometimes. If the current Federal Government dont measure up they will know what to do come next election.

Ummm...I'm still not convinced just how many of the Sabah voters are bona fide "Malaysians".

Seems to be some doubt thrown there...

SM'

The opposition has achieved what they and many Malaysians wanted. Now, as you say it's time for him to clean up his cabinet and his act too.

I hope he wouldn't appoint his son-in-law as a Minister. To repair the broken bridge with Mahathir, maybe he should appoint Mukhriz to an important portfolio.

Let us wait and see how benevolent he is.

Zawi,
It's a political awakening and the dawn of a new era for Malaysians. We only know one government for half a century.

Malaysians are waking up to the needs for change.

The oppositions showing was extraordinary which they didn't expect.

Not getting the 2/3 is samll matter, it was the loss of the 5 states that was the biggest humiliation for them. While they were busy guarding the front door the oppositions enter through the back door, which was left wide open.

Kittycat46,

It's may be true there are some illegal who somehow managed to get the proper papers to register as voters but this number is not big.

I would like to add a point of view from S'wak, as we all know, S'wak is the only state in M'sia that UMNO did not penetrate for the reason that there are BN component parties there. And the most influencial for now is SUPP, from what I understand, S'wakians do not wish to see UMNO to go to Sarawak and that's why the BN component won. I was also given the understanding that, many Sarawakians are not happy by the achievements of the current BN component parties there.

anonymous,

You don't want UMNO to be in Sarawak and I hope your politicians will keep it that way.

In Sabah time will come when Sabahans will wake up and do what they did to USNO and Berjaya.
