What Happened In 1998 ?

Hantu Laut

Ahmad Ismail was a staunch supporter of Anwar Ibrahim during the initial period of Anwar's sodomy allegation and the sacking from his deputy premiership and from the party.

His defiance against the sacking of Anwar was much reported in various newspapers at that time.

Below are some of them:

1.The Umno Bukit Bendera division, which held a special meeting yesterday, decided to ask that Anwar be given a fair trial in defending himself against the allegations.
"As stated by Dr Mahathir before, we should not pronounce someone guilty until the courts have stated so.
"Anwar should be given a chance to explain his side to the people so that peace can be preserved in the country," the division said in a Press statement today.
The statement was signed by Bukit Bendera division chief Senator Datuk Ahmad Ismail, his deputy Azmi @ Iskandar S.H.O. Merican, its Youth wing leader Mohd Ismail Mohd Othman, deputy Youth chief Ismadi Abu Bakar, assistant secretary Syed Abdul Kadir Aidid, deputy Youth treasurer Azhar Ahmad and the division's Youth information chief Yahaya Ibrahim.
Other signatories were Bukit Bendera Wanita chief Haslinda Mohd Hashim and her deputy Asnah Hussain.
The division said it supported Dr Mahathir as Umno president and Prime Minister.
"We also support Anwar as both are personalities and leaders who are hard to replace," they added (New Strait Times 9 Sept 1998)

2.The state Umno's recent meeting which endorsed the supreme council's decision to expel former deputy party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was held in proper manner.
Its deputy liaison committee chairman Datuk Mohd Shariff Omar, in saying this, dismissed Bukit Bendera division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail's claims that the meeting was not properly held and therefore the decision taken by the nine division leaders present was null and void.(The Sun 14 Sept 1998)

3.The crowd of supporters at sacked deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's residence came alive tonight when his wife, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, took centre-stage to thank them for their support.
Another speaker was Senator Datuk Ahmad Ismail of Umno Bukit Bendera who said the division fully supports Anwar. Anwar, who addressed the crowd about 10pm, said he was touched by their support (The Sun 15 Sept 1998).

4.Datuk Ahmad Saad, Datuk Ahmad Ismail and other Penang politicians closely allied with Anwar attended a dinner at Datuk Abdullah's house on Saturday night.
Datuk Ahmad Saad, the acting divisional chief in Anwar's former constituency, said that the former No 2 should have refrained from attacking the party, and put his own interests on the backburner.
"When Pak Lah was dropped from the Cabinet in the 80s, he did not attack the government or anybody. He just kept quiet," he said, referring to the current Deputy Premier. (Straits Times 21 June 1999)

Is Ahmad Ismail a stooge or playing the racialist game just to get more supports from the Malays at the expense of UMNO

Sir HL,

Thank you for posting my article. I must say your articles are very well researched and political history does serve your opinion well. Not many blogs are as well researched or thought off. Lets keep the back channels open.

as salaamu alaikum,

A bit too convenient for my taste.

These after the fact revelations sound like what happened to saiful when he was pictured with that guy from Najib's office, to prove he was Najib's stooge.

Just because this happened ten years ago, doesn't mean anything.

Even AAB was a close friend of Brother Anwar Bin Ibrahim, and he's the one who's destroying Malay credibility, so are we now going to say AAB is Brother Anwar Bin Ibrahim's stooge? :)

A plausible scenario indeed. But 1 day is a long time in politics so 10 years?

hutang budi di bawa mati? are we still in those era?

i dont think so.

normal people allegiances changes over the years affected by numerous factors such as livelihood etc.

but political allegiances? i would say it changes over weeks or month - soon as the individual in power is not in power anymore - .

if your painted scenario is real then Ahmad as an individual would become my idol as an individual who will go to extreme for his leader/friend though I abhor the means he used to divert attention.

HL,

I have just read that Khir Toya 9Ex-Selangor MB) & one of the Utusan Malaysia Reporters has been given 7 days to apologize to Teresa Kok (from the DAP).
It seems that they accused her of going to one of the Mosques & told them to take down the Speakers so that the "Azan" could not be heard (or something to that effect)!
I'm sure you will agree that this is utter rubbish, even without checking the facts as we all know Teresa Kok well enough by now.
What "scares" the living daylights out of me is that more & more UMNO people & their supporters are bringing up the May 13th incident again! Whenever they (UMNO) get desperate they do this.
If we don't becareful, things can get "ugly" again. Seriously all of us peace loving Malaysians of ALL Races & Religions MUST "reject" this type of behavior.
I hope I am mistaken but, I'm sure the article I read above is true.
God help us, God help Malaysia.

There are informers, moles, spies, counter-spies and double-crossers. Such is the state of politics in Bolehland.

Another of DSAI's ex-trusted lieutenants is now UMNO's treasurer. The game has to be played out and I suspect we'll know the outcome b4 end September.

UMNO is losing support from the malay so UMNO is using racial issues to gain back support from the malay. In doing so they tried to manipulated the May 13th tragedy once again. It's so obvious.

zahar,

I did say improbable but not impossible.

agnos,
You are absolutely right. In politics there are no permanent enemies and friends.

Just look at Mahathir he is now supporting Razaleigh to topple Pak Lah and probably Najib too.

sm,

All kind of rumours are swirling around this country.Sometimes,it is hard to tell between the fact and the fiction.Too many spin doctors trying to out smart each other.

Those with bad intention to create chaos should be roped in and dealt with in accordance with the law.

May 13 is becoming the bogeyman to frighten us, but I would not put it aside because there are enough mad politicians in this country who are prepared to do the unthinkable.

Not only those in power are reckless I noticed some politicians from the oppositions are equally reckless.

donplaypuks,

Right ! Politics is dirty because of dirty politicians.

anonymous,
We all lose if that happened. The situation would improve after 15 Sept, whoever would be the government by then.

If Anwar failed than he should stop bickering and get down to work to get it in the next elections, otherwise he would sound like the medicine man at the Sunday market, attracts a lot of onlookers but very few buying the medicine.
