Is BERSIH Instigating Mob Rule ?

Hantu Laut

I have deep antipathy for street's demonstration for whatever the cause may be.We can take and copy many good things from the West but simply aping some of the negative elements that could throw the nation into chaos to fulfill one man's agenda is totally irresponsible.

Who would believe there is no free and fair elections in Malaysia?

It makes one wonder how an educated person like Ambiga Sreenevasan had the cheek to fool the people that there is no free and fair elections in this country. Can she explain how the oppositions managed to capture 5 state governments and 83 parliamentary seats in March 2008 if truly the general elections were rigged. If so, why was the BN so stupid by not giving themselves at least the two-thirds majority if they can manipulate the election results as accused by the oppositions.

It is obvious Ambiga is doing Pakatan's dirty politics. She hasn't got the clout nor the potency to attract people to her cause without the strong backing of Pakatan.

Will the massive street protests bring about the desired change and a cleaner electoral system or rather create havoc and chaos to the country peace and harmony and a strong possibility of mob rule. The Arab experience has shown how combustible massive assembly of people could be, that could turn violent, destruction to human lives and properties and eventual mob rule.

Without any doubt, there were corruptions and abuses of power but this government is not as evil as painted by the oppositions. It is still a legitimate government elected by the people.

The BERSIH walk for free and fair elections is a charade and an excuse to go saberattling the BN cage and to show the people the undemocratic action of the government to deny the people the right to peaceful assembly.

The ultimate goal of BERSIH is not free and fair elections. The ultimate goal is the saving of Anwar Ibrahim. They expected the announcement of the foreign experts report of the sex tape to be made during the court case of the Datuk Trio with conclusive evidence that it was Anwar in the tape.

Why wasn't the BERSIH's walk executed before the announcement? Because they want to inflict maximum collateral damage on Najib's government.

The government foolishly fell into the trap. The pre-empative arrests of BERSIH organisers and followers, allegations of communist elements and the banning of BERSIH's T-shirts have done the damage and the job to placard it as an evil government without them even going to the streets.

The Home Minister Hishammudin Onn has risen to the highest level of incompetency by his heavy-handedness in dealing with the situation. You can't arrest people before a crime is committed. The Home Minister and the Police should know this better than anyone else.

I am against street demonstrations but in the same manner I do not tolerate police action of arresting people before they have done anything against the law.

Here, reported in Rocky's Bro a person wrote on twitter:

5xmom: I think all Christians shud march for all the persecution they had done to us and our Lord.
Either he is suffering from persecution complex or intentionally wanting to cause trouble. The Allah controversy can't in any sense of the word be construed as persecution of Christians.Persecution is hostility and ill-treatment that may include the banning of the religion. No one in this country have been persecuted because of their religion.

As a matter of fact most religious persecutions were under the Islamic flag, those considered deviants.Strange as it may be, Shia, the second largest denomination of mainstream Islam is also banned in this country.

How can the Christians be persecuted when there are more churches in this country than mosques.

Come to Sabah and see for yourself that there are more churches than mosques here.We see it as our legacy.

I was in church last week for the funeral service of a close friend and even saw a lady with a todong attending the service.

Why can't you West Malaysians be more tolerant and behave the same way.

I know the danger of a huge rally but the government should be prepared to take the risk and act constitutionally and according to the law against the protesters.

I hope the people in BERSIH would come to their senses stop the clarion calls for people to go on the streets to serve the opposition's agenda

Open Water, Divers Beware

SYDNEY (AP) — Australian safety officials said Wednesday that they were investigating a dive boat company that accidentally left a U.S. tourist behind while he was snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, forcing the panicked man to swim to another boat for help.

A spokesman for the company denied Ian Cole was ever in danger. But the incident drew immediate comparisons to the infamous case of Americans Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who died in 1998 after their tour boat left while they were scuba diving on the reef. Officials believe they drowned or were eaten by sharks.

Cole, 28, of Michigan, said he was snorkeling on Saturday when he lifted his head out of the water and realized his tour boat, the Passions of Paradise, was nowhere in sight.

"The adrenalin hit in and I had a moment of panic, which was the worst thing I could have done at that point," Cole told The Cairns Post. "I was able to calm myself just a little bit because there was another boat still out there and I made my way to that vessel. Lucky it was there because otherwise I may have drowned. I did not handle the situation well and I was tired."

A spokeswoman for the Queensland state government work safety agency, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, confirmed on Wednesday that the department was investigating the incident, but declined to comment further.

Passions of Paradise referred calls to Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators executive officer Col McKenzie, who did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press. But he told the Post that Cole was never in danger of drowning, since other boats were nearby.

The Indian Mandore

GEORGE TOWN: Penang MIC Youth has accused Bersih 2.0 chairperson S Ambiga of being the latest Pakatan Rakyat mandore out to hoodwink Indians to support the opposition coalition.

Over the past month, MIC Youth’s J Dhinagaran said Pakatan had featured Ambiga as its Indian face to woo Indians to take part in the July 9 rally and to support the opposition in the next polls.

“Pakatan’s main target are emerging cyber-savvy Indian youths,” he told reporters today after filing a police report against the Bersih rally.

He alleged that Pakatan leaders, especially Anwar Ibrahim, had portrayed Ambiga as a “dynamic, gutsy and uncompromising Indian leader representing the people’s interests.”

Dhinagaran accused Ambiga, the former Bar Council president, of using the rally to promote herself to secure a seat to contest in the next polls under a Pakatan ticket.

He added that Pakatan planned to use the rally to galvanise the Malaysian electorate against Barisan Nasional and promote Ambiga as the next “great Indian hope with a multi-racial outlook.”

“It’s actually a win-win situation for Ambiga and Pakatan. In the end, the loser will be the Indian community,” he said.

He chided Ambiga for never having spoken out on any Indian issue and had always wore the multi-racial hat to promote herself as an Indian mandore within the opposition rank.

For Anwar, he said, Ambiga was a perfect candidate due to her legal and NGO backgrounds.

Whether the Bersih rally takes place or not, Dhinagaran said he was sure of Pakatan parading Ambiga as its top Indian leader.

“Pakatan non-Indian leaders will not want a strong Indian grassroots leader among their equals. Ambiga standing as an elitist without grassroots background will suit the bill for Pakatan.

“It’s just a dirty tactic by Anwar and company to deceive the working class Indians,” he told FMT.Read more.

Malaysian Arrests Are a Puzzle

Opposition party members arrested on allegations of seeking to overthrow the king

The arrest Sunday by Malaysian security forces of a Socialist Party member of parliament and 30 others for allegedly intending to wage war against the country’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or king, appears to be a throwback to 50 years ago when Communists still thronged the country’s jungles.

The arrest has opposition party members scratching their heads in confusion and attempting to discern what actually happened at a police checkpoint in Penang, where police said the party members had been found with subversive materials instigating an overthrow of the government.
Opposition figures said the 30 were on a campaign swing in the north of the country to seek to generate support for a bigger rally on July 9 that has police – and the ruling Barisan Nasional – much more clearly worried. Sources within the United Malays National Organization, the country’s biggest ethnic political party and the leader of the ruling Barisan Nasional, say that rally, by an organization called Bersih, or the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections, an umbrella group encompassing 64 civil-society groups, has been hijacked by Pakatan Rakyat, the three-party opposition coalition made up principally of Parti Islam se-Malaysia, the Democratic Action Party and Parti Keadilan Rakyat, headed by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The Bersih rally’s organizers say they are not connected to any political parties. Although the July 9 rally has been declared illegal by the police, the organizers, headed by Ambiga Sreenevasan, the former president of the Bar Council, say they plan to march through the streets of Kuala Lumpur to deliver a petition to the Agong, whom Parti Sosialis supposedly wants to overthrow.
Adding to police concerns, the Malay nationalist NGO Perkasa, led by firebrand Ibrahim Ali, and the youth division of UMNO say they will hold counter-rallies, increasing the possibility of violent confrontation. Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has said that he wouldn’t rule out using the country’s strict Internal Security Act, which allows in effect for indefinite detention, on the organizers of the Bersih rally, but maintained that other laws will be used for now.

Indeed, the security establishment has considerable reason for concern even without the counter-rallies. A massive rally in Kuala Lumpur in November 2007 by led by Bersih brought 40,000 people to the streets in one of the biggest anti-government rallies Malaysia had seen to that point. It was a harbinger of the March, 2008 vote that cost the Barisan Nasional its two-thirds lock on Parliament and the leadership of five states.
That rally turned central Kuala Lumpur into chaos as baton-wielding riot police used water cannon and tear gas to try and thwart an attempt by tens of thousands of marchers to deliver a petition to Malaysia’s king, asking for royal intervention in delivering electoral reform.

As the current Bersih rally has become closer to reality, the government has grown more concerned, warning that any violence would be met with force.

“The Bersih marches have been hijacked by opposition parties ahead of pending national elections in a bid to cause unrest while clamoring for electoral reform despite the elections that yielded huge gains for the opposition,” said a lawyer close to Umno. “Furthermore, elements of the outlawed communist Party of Malaya have reared their ugly head with the tacit backing from the DAP and the Bar Council, which is widely seen as engaging the ruling Umno Government to dilute its Malay privileges and national identity that places Islam as its official religion. How else to explain the arrests of 30 Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) activists in Penang late Saturday, apparently under section 122 of the Penal Code which arraigns rebellion against the king?”

The Penang deputy police chief, Abdul Rahim Jaafar said police seized 28 T-shirts, eight of which bore pictures of figures such as the long-dead Argentine revolutionary figure Che Guevara, from the 30 Parti Sosialis members. As a flock of critics pointed out, the Che T-shirts can be bought all over the night markets of Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Although the Communists were defeated in 1960, the insurgency dragged on in the northern jungles on the Thai border until 1989, almost unnoticed by the bulk of Malaysians, who had got about the business of turning their country into a capitalist, exporting powerhouse that made Communism basically irrelevant. With the insurgency over for the past 22 years, the Communist Party remains outlawed and the party’s elderly longtime leader, Chin Peng, remains outside the country despite a plea to be allowed to come back so that he could die with his family.

Opposition figures including the DAP’s Lim Kit Siang ridiculed the arrests, saying on his blog that they were more an indication over the government’s “fret and fever” over the planned July 9 march that “has driven elements of our security establishment nuts.”Read more

Sex, Lies and Videotape in Malaysia

Three men known collectively as “Datuk T” pleaded guilty Friday in a Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court to screening a videotape in March allegedly featuring Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim having sex with a Chinese prostitute earlier this year.

The three are former Malacca Chief Minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik, a stalwart of the United Malays National Organization, Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, formerly a close friend of and fundraiser for Anwar, and Shuib Lazim, former treasurer of the Malay supremacy NGO Perkasa, which is closely aligned with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. The three said they had made the video to demonstrate that Anwar wasn’t qualified to be prime minister.

The three are Datuks, a minor honorific originally designed to be the eqivalent of a British knighthood although in practice it is probably somewhere down the ranks in value, given the vast numbers of them in Malaysia. It is the lowest in the country’s list of titles bestowed on businessmen and others.* They entered the courtroom wearing broad smiles and waving to the crowd.

Anwar, his family, his political party Parti Keadilan Rakyat and the opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat have continued to insist that a stunt double made the film, which was shown to reporters under mysterious circumstances at a prestigious hotel. They have been demanding that charges of distributing pornography be lodged against the three over the video, which has since pretty much gone viral across Malaysia.

That strategy may have backfired, since it allowed the three, who appeared in court Friday, to deliver what they said was an analysis by experts from Dartmouth College in the United States that the video was authentic. Thamby Chik’s lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah later told reporters that the experts said it was “99.99 percent certain” that the man in the video was Anwar.

“Results of the analysis by experts from Dartmouth College, Handover, New Hampshire in the US verified the authenticity of the video, that there was no tampering or any act of super-imposing and that it originated from a DVR camcorder taken from Datuk Shazryl,” deputy public prosecutor Kamalluddin Md Said was quoted as saying in local media.

Anwar’s allies insist that whether the video was or wasn’t tampered with, it wasn’t Anwar in the picture. In fact, the video so far appears to have done little damage to Anwar’s reputation. He has been ensnared for months in a long-running trial for allegedly having homosexual sex a then-23-year-old aide. He was imprisoned for six years on similar charges in a trial that is universally regarded as having been trumped up.

Catching politicians in sex videos has become de rigueur in Malaysia. In January 2008 Chua Soi Lek, then Malaysia’s health minister, was forced to resign after individuals thought to rivals in the Malaysian Chinese Association filmed him getting into bed with an unnamed woman. Chua recovered, however, and was later named to head the MCA, the second biggest party in the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

Then, in mid-June this year, VCDs started making the rounds purportedly depicting Mohamad Sabu, the newly elected deputy president of Parti Islam se-Malaysia, the formerly fundamentalist, rural-based Islamic party whose top leadership was taken over by professionals during their most recent party conclave. Mat Sabu, as he is known, is credited with transforming the party into a secular organization with the potential to challenge UMNO for ethnic Malay votes.

The videotape, under the title “Skandal Seks Mat Sabu,” on what PAS officials said was a forged PAS letterhead, reportedly showed the political leader caught with his pants down by Malaysia’s religious police. Opposition leaders trashed the report, saying Umno had degenerated into a distributor of blue films.

Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik himself was caught in an ugly scandal in 1994 when he was forced to resign as chief minister of Malacca after eing charged with statutory rape of a 15 year old girl. The girl’s grandmother reportedly turned him in. However, the charge was later withdrawn when the public prosecutor cited lack of evidence. Instead, the girl was given three years in “protective custody” and opposition leader Lim Guan Eng was jailed for publishing the details of the alleged rape.Read more

Change BERSIH Walk To Demand Anwar's Resignation

Hantu Laut

The highest moral crime a man could have committed against a nation...... the indignation and persistant lies that misled the whole nation into believing his innocence and portrayal of himself as victim of political persecution and conspiracies.

The state of denial and plea of innocence would continue.

But it's better late than never. There is still time to salvage himself by coming out with the truth and resign from all political positions.

People can forget and forgive.Chua Soi Lek sex scandal and his honest admission led him to be elected as President of MCA.

Without any doubts from the many incidents of impropriety and infidelity of public figures in the West the "Mat Sallehs" are whiter than white.............. have more sense of moral shame.A scandal of this magnitude would have knocked sense into their heads, bite the bullet and be done with.

Bill Clinton took the risk of losing his presidency by admission of guilt.Infidelity, a moral crime against the code of conduct of a president and disapproved of a man holding such office would have removed him as president if he had lied and been dishonest about the truth. He would have been impeached. His honesty saved him.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned as IMF Chief even before he was proven guilty. He needs not but than that not how things operate in the West. Guilty or innocence, a scandal is good enough to demand resignation from office.

In this country we have no moral sins, we can defend any sleazebag, shamelessly, as long as we benefit from it.

No one is infallible, to err is human but to live a life of lies and deceit is an unforgiveable crime for those coveting the high office.

Here, is another one of Bar Council full of themselves. They have become judges of the judges.Obviously, judges in Malaysia don't know how to run their courts, they need some half-six lawyers to tell them what to do.

If Anwar is a man in the street who would care what he does with his private life but than Anwar is not a man in the street, he yearns to be the prime minister of this nation and the people have the right to know the truth.

Anwar should resign as MP on his own accord and prove his innocence in the court of law by taken those who smeared his name to court.

If not, it may be morally commanding on Ambiga to change BERSIH's walk for democrary to a walk demanding the resignation of Anwar as member of parliament and de facto leader of the opposition.

Credentials Of College And Experts That Analyse The Sex Video

Hantu Laut

The state of denial continues here. PKR's Johari Abdul seemed a better expert than the two experts who spent years studying and working in digital forensic.

Below are credentials of the college and the two experts that study and analyse the sex video and concluded that the man in the video is 99.9 % Anwar Ibrahim.

The Dartmouth College

1.Proffessor Hany Farid

2.Assistant Proffessor Lorenzo Torresani

I have nothing to say but await Pakatan leader's reactions to this shocking disclosure.

Would they ask for Anwar's resignation?

Bersih! Siapa Yang Kotor ?

Hantu Laut

I am still confused about Bersih's march for clean and fair elections.

Before, it was the March 2008 General elections that was purportedly rigged to deny the oppositions from winning but, amazingly, they almost captured the government, denied the BN its traditional two-thirds majority and won 5 states. The BN was almost trounced if not for Sabah and Sarawak, which were still in the slumbers then.

The oppositions never in their wildest dream believe they could win 82 parliamentary seats and 47.8% of the total votes cast against the ruling party 52.2 %.As they say the rest is history.

One may ask how could a dirty general elections gives the oppositions such astounding results if there were truly massive cheating by the ruling party?

Now, they are using the Sarawak state elections as an excuse to justify the march for clean, free and fair elections.Did DAP cheat in the elections? They won 12 out of 15 seats contested and helped PKR to win one.

Every time they failed to capture the government the question of rigged polls would become their staple food to demonise the government, portraying it as a wicked and evil regime to vulnerable and uninitiated Malaysians, who would swallow it hook, line and sinker.

These are Malaysians who are just too lazy to make their own analysis and use their better judgement but would rather be led by the opposition's empty rhetoric as in the proverbial Malay idiom "seperti kerbau dicucuk hidung"

One may ask again how did the oppositions made tremendous gains in the recent Sarawak state elections if there were massive cheating?

How did DAP managed to capture 12 out of 15 seats contested, PKR a miserable 3 out of 49 seats contested and PAS 0 out of 5 seats contested? DAP made the biggest gain, doubling the number of seats in the Sarawak State Assembly. Did DAP cheat to win almost all the Chinese seats?

There is little doubt that PKR and PAS are not yet accepted by the people of Sarawak hence the poor performance .Deceitful as usual, they blamed polls rigging as the reason for their lacklustre performance.

Anwar Ibrahim, instead of slinging mud on others for his party's poor performance should accept the fact that the people of Sarawak and Sabah for that matter do not like his leadership style and do not want PKR in the states. The big screw up he and his wife made in Sabah PKR has made people weary of his leadership.

Many foreign news media have put BN as the likely winner in the 13th General Elections, ostensibly, without two-thirds majority. These predictions have brought shivers to the opposition's camps and they are using the same modus operandi they used in 2007 just before the March 2008 GE to rattle the government and hoodwink the people that they must change the government to save this nation from falling into the abyss of economic disaster.Rising food prices and cut in subsidies are some of their political ammunition.

Rising food prices is a worldwide phenomenon, no government has complete control over the rising costs of food.Malaysia is not alone in this indisputable world food crisis.

Who is Ambiga Sreenevasan trying to bluff saying that BERSIH is apolitical and an independent NGO? PAS promised to mobilise 300,000 of its members on to the streets and Anwar Ibrahim says he would instruct Ambiga to call off the protest if Najib can promise a clean and fair elections? Isn't the active involvement of opposition's leaders make it a political rally mainly to help the oppositions garner public sympathy. This arrogant woman told the EC time for talk is over here.

She will be chosen as a PKR candidate in the 13th General elections. That much she had been promised that have made her completely arrogant and belligerent.

It stinks to high heaven that she played dumb and played the "wayang kulit" that Anwar has no say in the matter when in fact she took instructions from him and other opposition leaders to copy what is now dubbed as the "Arab Spring" to bring down a government through streets protests and people's power. Anwar's statement of "I will instruct Amiga to call off the walk" makes him looks like the chief designer of the BERSIH's walk on the 9th of July.

It may have escaped Amiga's mind that this is a duly elected government, elected by the people and any attempt to overthrow such government using any form of violence or street protest is an act of treason.

Can Ambiga control 300,000 protesters on the streets of Kuala Lumpur? They would come from all strata of society and in the midst there would certainly be roughnecks and troublemakers out to cause trouble.

Of course, for her and the leaders of the oppositions, typical of their brand of politicking, they would simply put the blame on the government even if such trouble actually came from their side.

Anwar is desperately seeking new avenues to revive his ailing political health. His Western allies have abandoned him when they discovered his hidden anti-Semitics.A stance he insidiously managed to hide for a long time until the day he made the biggest mistake of his life by his malevolent desire to propound to the Muslims of this country Najib as friend of the Jews, unconsciously bashing the Jews at the same time. The Jews did not take kindly to some of his remarks. Not a smart thing that sincere people would do.

APCO is not more Jewish as Monsanto, Unilever and Nestle are.His attempts to resurrect himself with his Western allies failed miserably.Even the Western media whom used to espoused him as a moderate Muslim leader persecuted by the Malaysian government is now giving him the cold shoulder.

How do you trust a man who was comfortably numb to corruptions and abuses of power that surrounded him when he was in UMNO and the second most powerful in government
suddenly found his clear conscience when out in the cold?

Undoubtedly, a street protest may help in restoring his waning popularity.

What is there to clean up? The opposition's election gains spoke volumes of the fair and free elections in this country.

There were also complaints that we should change our Westminster type system to direct elections as opposed to the present "first past the post" (FPTP) voting system.

Why is there a need to change a system that have worked well for over half a century here and for hundreds of years in the United Kingdom (UK).There is no foolproof system.Every system will have its weaknesses and it only takes a few clever minds to work the system to their advantage.

It is the same system we inherited from the British that gives a single party the majority based on number of seats rather than the absolute majority of all votes cast.

Since 1922 the UK has had 18 out of 23 general elections that produced a single party government. The rest would have been hung parliament or minority government.

Below is the 2005 UK General Election results.

Seats
This table indicates those parties with over one seat, Great Britain only
Seats % Votes % Votes
Labour Party 355 56.5 36.1 9,552,436
Conservative Party 198 31.5 33.2 8,782,192
Liberal Democrats 62 9.9 22.6 5,985,454
Scottish National Party 6 1.0 1.6 412,267
Plaid Cymru 3 0.5 0.7 174,838
Others 4 0.6 5.7 1,523,716
628

26,430,908

As you can see the Labour Party got 355 seats but only 36.1% of the total votes cast while the other major parties, the Conservative and Liberal Democrats received 55.8% of the votes cast but did not have enough seats to form a coalition government.Even if all the other parties joined hands there would still be not enough to form a coalition government.

In 2010, the UK Elections ended with a hung parliament. Not a single party had a clear majority to form the government.

The size and number of voters in a constituency is a matter of logistics. In urban areas where the density of population is much higher the constituencies may be broken into smaller areas but with higher number of voters compared to semi-urban and rural areas.

Blaming the system is a poor excuse. If you are popular no system can cheat you of victory.I am sure DAP is very happy with its achievement in the Sarawak polls. The one that's whining and moaning is Anwar's PKR.

The oppositions also blamed gerrymandering as one of the reasons why they can't demolish the government. When was the last time the government re-demarcate the electoral boundaries? I am sure there was gerrymandering in the past but would that be the reason the opposition can't win or the obvious, the people are not ready to accept them as the central government?

Our fight should be against corruptions and abuses of power, not a poor excuse of wanting to clean up a pure fantasy of a tainted electoral system.

The march through the thoroughfares of Kuala Lumpur would disrupt businesses and traffic causing great inconveniences to the people who do not want such unnecessary disruption to their daily lives.Do these dickheads care? Obviously not.

Now, PAS threatened to put 1 million of its members on the streets replicating Tahrir Square in Egypt.Do you need a million zombies for a peaceful march to clean up the electoral system or you need the numbers to bring down a government?

This started as peaceful demonstration. It could happen here.

Perkasa and UMNO Youth threatening responses to BERSIH are making the people more jittery. The police should deal with all groups in the same manner without fear or favour.

The Final Journey

A poem for Andrew.

You were gone before we knew it,
Still so hard to let you go,
The memories we have with you,
Your kindness and charity,
Few would ever know,

The joy of life we had together,
Would be cherished forever,
We mortals have no say,
In matter of life and death,
You were gone before your time,

By the divine providence,

This be your final journey,
We know your are in heaven,
And that's where you'll always be.
But we'll meet again someday.

Why Does Australia Want To Send Refugees To Malaysia?

Between 2003 and 2004, Marion Le, a Canberra-based lawyer, made regular trips to the remote island of Nauru in the South Pacific. But she wasn't going for a beach holiday. At the time, Nauru was part of the so-called Pacific Solution, Australia's policy of processing and detaining asylum seekers arriving by boat in offshore detention facilities.

From 2001 to 2007, thousands of asylum seekers were in offshore detention centers while Australian immigration officials decided their fate. Le, who helped many migrants file successful asylum claims to Australia, was among the Pacific Solution's many critics in Australia and abroad, saying the system was both a human rights violation and a breach of international law. After former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd came into office in 2007 and closed the centers on Nauru, Papua New Guinea's Manus Island and the Australian territory of Christmas Island, Le recalls feeling "relief" that the government was finally listening to the plight of those that had been confined. (Watch a video about asylum seekers in South Africa.)

So it's something of a surprise that today, Le wants to have the facility in Nauru reopened. "It's the better of the two evils," she says. The second "evil" that Le is referring to has been nicknamed the Malaysian Solution. It's the latest plan by the Australian government to deter its longtime problem of "irregular maritime arrivals," and to stop the business of the people smugglers who get them here. The proposal, tabled by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in early May, mandates that asylum seekers arriving to Australia by boat will no longer be taken to Christmas Island, where they have access to getting an Australian visa. Instead, the first 800 asylum seekers will be sent to Malaysia — "to the back of the queue," as Gillard puts it. In turn, Australia will give a permanent home to 4,000 mainly Burmese refugees over a period of four years who are now residing in or near the Malaysian capital. "Now [the governments] are just people trading," says Le. "What they are suggesting is deplorable."

Since May 7, when the Malaysia Solution was announced, there have been more than 274 people who have arrived to Australia by boat. For the moment, they are in limbo on a detention center in Christmas Island. A formal deal between Canberra and Kuala Lumpur is close to being, signed according to Immigration Minister Chris Bowen, though it has not been announced where the affected migrants will be processed. Bowen told ABC Radio on June 9 that they will be processed in a third country. (See how refugees are living around the world today.)

So far, Malaysia is the closest the Australian government has come to establishing a regional deal. But it's not the first. Gillard had hopes for building a detention center in East Timor, but President Jose Ramos-Horta told journalists on April 29 that this is not an option. There have also been talks with Papua New Guinea about reopening the facilities at Manus Island, and Thailand has reportedly expressed interest in participating in a similar scheme to Malaysia. Critics are concerned about the seemingly arbitrary nature of the location for offshore solutions. "I feel like Gillard is just throwing darts around the Pacific Ocean and hoping one sticks somewhere," says Le.

Malaysia, unlike Australia, is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, and therefore does not have special national laws that recognize refugees, fleeing their homes for fear of persecution, have different rights than illegal immigrants. "We have a country like Australia that has signed the Convention sending people to a country that hasn't signed the Convention, and where we know refugee protection is deeply problematic," says Graham Thom, a spokesperson for Amnesty International, which expressed concern over the agreement in a press release on May 8. The statement quoted a 2010 report by Amnesty which found that 6,000 refugees in Malaysia are caned annually for immigration-related offences, such as working, which is not legal for refugees in that nation. Bowen has since said that the 800 refugees coming from Australia will be issued with identity tags that should safeguard them against caning.

How Love Corrupts: The Story of a Weiner, an Anwar, and a Frenchman

By Christopher Badeaux

The story on the wind, as I write this, is that Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) is contemplating resignation as more details emerge of his online conversations with what tentatively appears to be a veritable corps of women aged 17 to 40. I hold no particular love for Congressman Weiner — his policy positions are impressively even more abhorrent than his personality, a feat that is comparable to identifying which of the Twelve Labors was harder — but if this is true, it either shows a sincere understanding of the enormous damage he has done to his constituents, his caucus, and the House to which he was elected; or a keen awareness that he will be persona non grata even in his own caucus for the rest of this term.

Either way, assuming there’s any truth to this story, this is a stunning level of self-awareness from a politician, especially one who has been babied by a favorable press corps for basically the entirety of his elected career.

The danger to a politician inclined to indulge his darker proclivities is not power. Power in modern nations, outside of a relative handful of non-democratic states, is fleeting and unstable. It’s not wealth. It’s love, the sort of love one gets for fulfilling others’ dreams for them, saying what they cannot or will not, and basically acting as their avatar in some public policy realm. All can be forgiven for an idol. Popular athletes internalized this lesson decades ago, but popular politicians have had it down since the Roman Republic.

Anthony Weiner has benefited from a media that loved to hear him speak — whether because he reminded them of Chuck Schumer, or because he said what they wanted to but wouldn’t, or because he would talk to them at any hour anywhere — and that media brought him places no ordinary Congressman from New York City would ordinarily reach. His Twitter followers — who later became his camp followers — came from across the country. He came to them as a standard-bearer for a kind of liberalism not really likely to succeed outside the Northeast and the Pacific Coast, the answer to their frustrated dreams in a sea of people who thought their political leanings mildly nutty. They loved him for it, they worshiped him for it, and it was that love, that worship, that brought him to relentlessly cheat on his wife (any woman who tells you that online sex with another woman is not cheating is lying to you); because if everyone loves you, how can you do wrong?

I’ve made no secret of the fact of my distaste for Anwar Ibrahim, and not just because he’s the Muslim Brotherhood’s kept man, and not just because his choice of coalition partners includes a band of hardcore socialists and Islamists who regretted not being able to shoot Americans during the invasion of Afghanistan. But I will freely confess that he is a terribly interesting person — and one clearly suffering from the same encompassing wave of uncritical love that enabled Congressman Weiner to telegraph his eponymous body part to any woman he felt would want to see it.

In Anwar’s case, that love — from Western media and politicians who should know better, from Malaysian websites that uncritically regurgitate his talking points, from his bands of loyal followers — has at the very least deluded him into a sort of messianism, where the democratically elected government of Malaysia is Olympus to his Prometheus. At the worst, if the allegations against him are true, it has led him to believe that forced sodomy and infidelity are excusable for him. Read more.

How To Buy A Birkin Bag

Hantu Laut

Interesting read about Birkin Bags by Raja Petra here.

Many Malaysian ladies with very rich husbands no matter how the wealth is gathered, honestly or dishonestly, coveted this most expensive and sought after bags by celebrities and the rich and famous.

Actresses, pop singers and wives of self-made millionaires and billionaires own one, two or dozens of them who cares it's their own money but should wives of Malaysian politicians carry this elusive bag of shameful extravagance knowing most Malaysians politicians have had humble beginnings.

The bag is not that elusive or hard to come by after all. It's a marketing gimmick to keep the price high for suckers of the world.

I did a bit of research to add to what RPK wrote.Read the story below:

Huffington Post

You've all heard of the oh-so-elusive Hermes Birkin bag. Carried by A-List celebs everywhere and knocked off by Canal Street vendors on every corner, a Birkin is the ultimate elitist symbol.

The elusive Birkin bag made by Hermes is so sought after as a status symbol by women worldwide that the French fashion house has a two year waiting list for potential owners...

The elusiveness of the Birkin has ensured it has remained one of the world's most coveted bags since Hermes named it after British actress Jane Birkin in 1984, with prices starting at about $9,000 and rising to about $34,000 for a crocodile skin bag.

However, HuffPost blogger Michael Tonello uncovers the mystery behind the Birkin and in the fashion equivalent of a tell-all book called Bringing Home The Birkin shows the masses of the world how they, too, can by-pass the marketing-ploy waiting list.

How did he do it?

"I would go into a store with a list in my Hermes Ulysse notebook and pile up scarves, shawls, bracelets, worth about $2,000. This made me seem a regular Hermes client," Tonello told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"Once I had that pile ready to buy at the last moment I'd ask for a Birkin and they would usually produce one of the back room. In 2005 I bought 130 Birkins in a three-month period -- and you tell me there is a waiting list?" Read more.

Chinese Internet Con

Mass arrests across Asia over phone scam network

PHNOM PENH - HUNDREDS of Chinese and Taiwanese nationals have been arrested across Asia in an international operation targeting telephone scam artists, officials in several countries said on Friday.

Most of the arrests were in Indonesia and Cambodia where 177 and 166 people respectively were held in a cross-border crackdown on criminals using Internet phone services to trick thousands of victims across the region out of money.

In Malaysia, police on Borneo island arrested 27 Chinese and 10 Taiwanese nationals for allegedly duping people into paying fake traffic fines, the official news agency Bernama and New Straits Times daily reported.

And Thai police said they had arrested four suspects, one Taiwanese woman and three Thai nationals, in raids on seven locations in Bangkok based on information provided by Taiwanese police. They said a representative of the Taiwanese police was present during the arrests.

The massive police operation appeared to be a co-ordinated response to tip-offs from authorities in China and Taiwan, though neither country confirmed or denied their involvement when contacted by AFP.Read more.

Is Malaysia Already A Welfare State?

Hantu Laut

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin deriding PAS by saying that the BN had not only achieved but exceeded its benevolence as a welfare state is false and pure histrionic.

Either the DPM do not understand the definition of welfare state or he is trying to bluff his way thinking Malaysians would swallow his unfounded claim hook, line and sinker.

Giving across the board subsidies to the general population does not make you a welfare state if that what the DPM think welfare state is all about. You can't call your country a welfare state if there still exists abject poverty.Malaysia has pockets of abject poverty scattered all over the country. You read about them in the news quite regularly.Maybe, the DPM only read political news and missed this social scourge that still afflict the nation.

A welfare state has the responsibility for the well being of its citizens by ensuring minimum standard of living for everyone. Most Western nations are welfare states because they provide the minimum comfort and standard of living for its citizens.

A welfare state would make available universal free education and medical care, insurance against sickness, disability and unemployment, income supplement and old age pension.Malaysia, by any definition is not a welfare state. Its housing programme for the poor is pathetic resulting in squatter's colonies sprouting all over the country.

PAS proposal is good but can they actually implement it when they took power. It needs a lot of financial resources. The only way is to remove all subsidies for the general population and use part of the savings for welfare purposes.

The present system of subsidies practised by the current government is an unfair system. Its benefits the wealthy and the middle class much more than the lower income and the poor, particularly and food and fuel subsidy which should be scrapped all together and spent the money on providing welfare benefits for the poor, old age citizens and good public transportation system in every major cities.

The lower income do not wish to own a car but some are forced to buy one because of the poor public transport. The government's policy of putting a car in every household is wrong, it's a burden on the poor and lower income group, when they have to pay through their noses for a car that could have cost much less if the protectionist policy is removed.

Owning a car eats major part of your income if you are in the lower income bracket.Even some middle income living in the city find it hard to make ends meet.

It is common in Malaysia for someone earning RM700-800 a month to buy a car. After paying the monthly instalment and fuel they have no money left to maintain the car which is one of the reasons for the high road fatalities in this country.

Let's hear what Muhyiddin means by saying Malaysia is already a welfare state.I hope he can explain in details.

For PAS I hope it is not a political gimmick to fish for votes.

Crowded Waters

BY ABRAHAM M. DENMARK

For the last two years, a quiet showdown has played out over the South China Sea, the body of water bordered by China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, and Taiwan. This little-known body of water is of vast strategic importance: Fully one-third of the world's maritime trade traverses the South China Sea, and some optimistic estimates of its untapped stores of oil and natural gas would make it a second Persian Gulf. The South China Sea is also a major highway linking the oil fields of the Middle East and the factories of East Asia, with more than 80 percent of China's oil imports (and large percentages for Japan and South Korea as well) flowing over its waters. As influential Asia-watcher Robert D. Kaplan has put it, the South China Sea's importance to the region makes it the "Asian Mediterranean."

Due to these waters' importance, several countries -- Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam -- claim sovereignty over part of these waters. Yet China claims rights of sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, as detailed in the "9-dash line" included in its submission to the United Nations. While tension in these waters has waxed and waned for several decades, recent years have seen an uptick in tensions. Starting in 2009, two discernable rounds of geopolitical intrigue can be identified, and last week likely marked the beginning of round three.

The first round began in March 2009, when Chinese fishing vessels harassed the U.S. surveillance ship Impeccable in international waters, 75 miles off the coast of China's Hainan Island. Three months later, a Chinese submarine collided (apparently accidentally) with the towed sonar array of the USS John S. McCain near Subic Bay off the coast of the Philippines. Other aggressive moves followed, including reports that Beijing had declared the South China Sea to be a "core interest," putting it on par with Taiwan and Xinjiang as fundamental strategic priorities. China's assertiveness was noted around the world and caused a strong reaction.

Round two. In July 2010, the United States and much of Southeast Asia pushed back. At a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum in Hanoi, 12 Southeast Asian countries complained of Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared freedom of navigation within the South China Sea to be a national interest of the United States. China initially reacted harshly to this pushback, with Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi reportedly declaring Clinton's remarks in Hanoi to be "an attack on China" and not so subtly reminding his Singaporean counterpart that "China is a big country and other countries are small countries and that is just a fact." A subsequent statement by the Chinese military reiterated China's "indisputable sovereignty" over 1.3 million square miles of the South China Sea -- which much of Southeast Asia naturally disputed.Read more.

Would You Want Them To Lead The Nation?

Hantu Laut

Would you want the party and its leaders to lead the nation? They can't even get their act together and try to hide their failure to pay rents on the premises they rented.

Something so trivial and yet too big to handle. They don't even know who is the actual landlord.

Read!

PETALING JAYA: In the latest twist to the PKR headquarters saga, the building located in Tropicana here will not go under the hammer tomorrow.

FMT learnt that on June 6, the building’s “real” landlord and beneficial owner Butiran Nyata Sdn Bhd obtained an ex-parte injunction against Ainb Tech Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Affin Bank from carrying out the auction until the inter-parte hearing is disposed of on June 27.

Previously, party leaders named Ainb-Tech as the building’s landlord, who they said failed to service the bank loan.

“PKR leaders, including treasurer William Leong, secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and vice-president Tian Chua, got their facts wrong,” said a source.

“The lease agreement is between Butiran Nyata and PKR. The bank is taking action against Ainb-Tech and not Butiran Nyata,” he added.

Ainb Tech was the original owner of the building and sold it to Butiran Nyata in 2008.

The latest information confirmed an earlier FMT report where a party insider claimed that PKR leaders named a different landlord from the one on the lease agreement.

“They don’t seem to have a clue about the lease details of the premises they are occupying. I don’t think they know who they are renting the building from and even how much money they have to pay for rental,” he had said.

The party’s five-storey headquarters in Merchant Square was scheduled to be auctioned off at the auctioneer’s office in Brickfields tomorrow afternoon.

PKR entered into a five-year lease with the landlord beginning July 2008 for RM20,000 per month. However, the party only paid rental until November 2008 resulting in arrears of RM600,000. Read more.

Rebranding of PAS, Who Is The Biggest Loser?

Hantu Laut

The results of the recent PAS party elections showed that PAS has discarded its Islamic tag kicking out the ulamas from its top leadership in order to better spread its influence among non-Muslims and other bumiputras.

DAP's rising popularity and unprecedented success in the recent Sarawak elections has given PAS members the inspiration and realization that using the Islamic robe may not go down well with non-Muslims, urbanised Malays and bumiputras of Sabah and Sarawak. It is time to exchange the Islamic robe for a more secular attire.

PAS learned very fast from the recent Sarawak state elections. Its Islamic credentials struck fear in the hearts of East Malaysians. The two states has strong Christian population. Its performance in the Sarawak elections was disastrous. With its new image it can now cast a wider net in the two East Malaysian states using the Erdogen ( Oxford Dictionary should include this noun in its next edition) name tag.

Who would be the biggest loser with PAS new cosmetic makeup?

Why cosmetic? Because behind the new image lurks the leopard with the same spot, the influential syura council is still dominated by the ulamas. The ulamas can still make a come back when time is ripe for them to do so.

If PAS came out the biggest winner collecting the most number of parliamentary seats in the 13th General Elections than the biggest loser would be Anwar Ibrahim who would lose his chance of becoming prime minister. The premiership would either go to Hadi Awang or DAP's favourite horse, the liberal minded Mohammad Sabu also popularly known as Mat Sabu.

As former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohammad wrote in his blog posting that the biggest winner is not PAS but DAP and Karpal Singh who managed to convert PAS to drop its Islamic tag and take the secular road.Karpal Singh has won the day and he needs not die to allow PAS to govern the nation.

DAP, as the second biggest party emerging from the 13th GE (General Elections) would have undue influence on who would be prime minister from the PAS stable.PKR would be the most junior partner in the coalition if Pakatan could muster enough seats to form the government. Anwar would not be able to demand the premiership to be given to him.

How do conservative Malays view PAS new image?

Do not rule out the possibility that PAS new image may actually works against it and works in favour of UMNO.

PAS may gain from some non-Muslims votes but may lose greater part of its Malay votes if conservative Malays deem supporting PAS is supporting DAP to greater height and political power and weakening of the Malay political power.Ardent DAP supporters would vote for PAS candidates in the hope of strengthening DAP grip in the coalition government if it materialised.

The March 2008 General Elections and the recent Sarawak polls are testimonies of how powerful the Chinese can be if they took a united stand. In its entire existence DAP has not seen its political fortunes rising to a dizzying height, capturing Penang for itself and powerful coalition partner in Selangor and Perak when Perak was under Pakatan. It grabbed almost all seats under the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. In Sarawak elections it won 12 out of 15 seats contested. It's due to get solid block of the Chinese votes in the 13th GE decimating MCA and Gerakan.

I would not speculate on the judgement of Anwar's sodomy trail. It can go both ways.I expect the trail would drag on until after the 13th GE.The BN would be in imminent danger of losing the elections if Anwar is incarcerated before the general elections. As it is Anwar's influence has diminished somehow but sending him to prison would make him a hero and precipitates the people's anger.

If UMNO leaders think sending Anwar to prison would lessen Pakatan's chance of winning the elections they are mighty wrong.Anwar may be the devil he is but majority of Malaysians and even the holier than thou PAS leaders and supporters believed in his innocence.Anwar is also the link between PAS and DAP. Without his political manoeuvring the partners deep-seated differences could derail the coalition.

PAS has yet to be accepted in the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak which would rather stay with the devil they know.Sabahans and Sarawakians biggest fear, particularly the Christians, is if PAS become the biggest partner in Pakatan taking over UMNO's role. The recent re-branding of PAS failed to excite the East Malaysians. The results of the 12th GE was a telling sign why Pakatan did not do well in Sabah and Sarawak.

Except for the DAP which will gain grounds in Sabah and Sarawak in the 13th GE, the other partners, PKR and PAS will not do well.I expect the KDM in Sabah and the Dayaks in Sarawak would stay put in BN.

The cold war in UMNO Sabah would also have a bearing on how the KDM would vote. If Najib's nominee Shafie Apdal stands in a state seat in the 13th GE than he is destined to be the chief minister replacing Musa Aman. There are talks that the KDM leaders are not in favour of Shafie after what happened during Mustapha's time and that there would be a new influx of immigrants using the back door. The story may have no bearing at all but the fear against illegal immigrants is real and more entranced in the KDM people.Najib needs to chose his candidates very carefully.

UMNO should not fear PAS new image, they could use it to their advantage if they know how.

Pakatan Rakyat's Deafening Silence

Hantu Laut

This is one of Malaysia's biggest shame and a waste of taxpayer's money paying for a bloated and inefficient civil service. An admission that Malays and bumiputras are unproductive lots.We need 10 to do 5 men's jobs.

The same thing happened in Sabah under the PBS regime filling up the civil service with KDM as fast as they could which has bloated the Sabah civil service till today. No succeeding government dares to take action to remedy the problem.

Surprisingly, Pakatan Rakyat has shown no interest on this subject which incurs the nation huge and wasteful recurring expenditure.

They have made a litany of other promises but stayed clear of this one that could save the nation billion of ringgits in wastage of public funds if the civil service were to be trimmed by half. This nation could have more money for development if half of the dead weight are removed from the civil service.

A complete "deafening silence" on the opposition front.Your guess as good as mine why they stayed clear of this controversial issue.

First World City Suffering From Third World Woes

Hantu Laut

When I lived in Singapore in the eighties and early nineties there was never a case of flooding in the commercial districts other then the occasional flash floods at Bukit Timah Road.

I suppose the massive reclamation works to increase the size of the city state are contributing to the new phenomenon.

Woe betide those who upset mother nature.

The heavy downpour early on Sunday also triggered flash floods across several parts of the island.

Senett Estate, Potong Pasir, MacPherson, Toa Payoh and Bukit Timah were also partially submerged by floods.

Two lanes along Bukit Timah Road near Cuscaden and Hillcrest Road were completely impassable to traffic at one stage. So too was the Kranji Expressway (KJE) at the slip road towards Woodlands.

With the advent of global warming Singapore would soon be the Venice of the East and eventually join the legendary Atlantis.

How Sex Can Keep Your Husband Happy - The Obedient Wives Club

Hantu Laut

Now we know why men strayed. Disobedient wives depriving their husbands of their sexual needs? Ibrahim Ali wasn't wrong when he said men seek extra marital sex because their wives neglect their responsibilities particularly on the subject of sex, which offended and outraged women's groups in the country.

Ironically, the "Obedient Wives Club" no less a women's group agree with his misplaced notion.

Must men get sex on demand irrespective of the time of day? The "Obedient Wives Club" appears to think so. Even if you are doing your household chores just drop your panties if your husband came home and has a sudden urge to copulate. Is that what marriage is all about.....SEX ? Men do enjoy sex but that has never been the reason for choosing your life partner.Sexual chemistry is but a small part of the equation.

Do you drive your man away just because of unfulfilled sex at home or there are other unpalatable reasons he sways and strays or is it because man are man, more physical and instinctive in nature? As in the saying "familiarity breeds contempt" it takes a long time to get to know a person well and people can change in behaviour and temperament. Your spouse may not be the same person ten years later as when you first met her or him.

Not all man enter or depart from a marriage because of sex. Most men do not think of sex as of their three daily meals. It is absolute fallacy. Sex is just part and parcel of our biological needs.Unlike food, water and air some people can live without it.There are men who stayed single and calibate their entire life.

Plenty of sex at home would not keep your husbands from straying.About 40 to 50% of men seek sexual gratification outside their relationship. The Kinsy sex study in 1950 found that 50% of men cheat at some point in their marriages. So, do what you like ladies if your man falls in that 50% category you may be the most beautiful, caring and obedient wife no matter how hard you try your man will stray. Some may have one indiscretion, some may have multiple indiscretions and some may just be incorrigible.

History has shown that men crave sexual variety. It's a primordial instinct that dates back to their stone age days. The hunters gatherers days and now instead of hunting and gathering food some men hunt and gather women.

In West Malaysia it seems a common practice amongst Muslim men to have more than one wives.I know of a driver who kept three wives plus the occasional girlfriends on a driver's salary. How he did it is a wonderment.

Being married to high-profile men ups the odds he'll stray because women are attracted to men who have power and status.
John F.Kennedy have had regular shenanigans when Jackie Kennedy was not in the White House. Donald Trump is proud of his name tag as the ultimate Lothario, unscrupulous seducer of women. The downfall of IMF Chief Dominique Strauss Kahn over an alleged rape of a chamber maid defies logic of a man of his status who can have as many consenting women as he wishes, is, if it is true, personification of the man inability to control lust.

OWC vice-president Dr Rohaya Mohamad said that women often forget their duties as a “good wife” which include providing pleasure to their husbands in the bedroom.

“A good wife is a good sex worker to her husband. What is wrong with being a whore in bed to your husband?” she asked.

The irony is Rohaya is a third wife out of four wives in one big happy family.

I wish good luck to members the "Obedient Wives Club" and hope their frequent bonking at home would keep the husbands happy and house-bound.

Malaysia's Rotten Enforcement

Rubbish pork and rotten enforcement

Stanley Koh | June 3, 2011

The recent revelation about “rubbish pork” being sold on the market was a grim reminder of how often unscrupulous business practices go unnoticed by Malaysian authorities.

Through the years, there have been several shocking disclosures raising concern about the efficiency and effectiveness of enforcement agencies as protectors of food safety and public health.

Apparently, the practice of using low quality pork – or even pig carrion – in sausages, dim sum and other pork-based foods has been going on for 10 years. Why did it go undetected for so long by any of the various levels of the authority responsible for food safety? Is the government adequately taking care of public health?

Food safety in the country is administered by a network of federal, state, district and municipal authorities. The top authority is the Food Quality Control Unit of the Health Ministry. It was established in 1974 and is responsible for overall technical supervision. It determines food safety policies, formulates legislation, guidelines and codes of practice and coordinates activities at state and district levels.

One wonders whether the unit, as well as the state, district and local authorities, have adequate financial and manpower resources to function effectively, considering that food production has grown rapidly over the years.

Is there anything besides rubbish pork that we should be worried about? Are there other dark secrets yet to be exposed?

Perhaps we should review the Malaysian track record.

Quite some time ago, Chinese guilds and associations raised concerns about the unscrupulous use of prohibited drugs and hazardous chemicals in animal feeds, vegetables and fruits.

Big profits

More recently, we heard complaints that some animal feed suppliers and livestock farmers had resorted to using various types of stimulants to accelerate the growth of livestock or plants so that they could reap in big profits, never mind the risk to public health.

In 1996, the public was shocked by reports that some poultry farmers were administering the cancer-causing antibiotic Nitrofuran to their chickens. According to one of these reports, a government laboratory tested 142 chickens and found that more than half showed contamination of up to 4,000%.

In August 1996, poultry farmers nationwide pledged not to administer Nitrofuran to chickens younger than 28 days. But a few days later, the government decided to ban the antibiotic altogether. Read more.

Anwar Gets SNAPPED: The Failure of an Opposition Leader Comes Home to Roost

By Leon H. Wolf

In a development that should be viewed as welcome by supporters of one of the relatively few functional Muslim-majority democracies in the world, signs are continuing to mount that Anwar Ibrahim’s opposition coalition may be beginning to crumble. Earlier this month, Anwar was sharply criticized by Sarawakians for only offering the Sarawak National Party (SNAP) three seats, which many Sarawakians considered to be an insultingly lowball number. Anwar attempted to deflect criticism for this move by claiming that he had an agreement signed in writing with the President of SNAP in which SNAP agreed to only contest three seats. SNAP’s response, essentially, was to call Anwar a liar:

Sarawak Nasional Party (SNAP) has strongly rebutted PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s claims that it had signed an agreement with the party, to contest only in three seats a few months before the recent Sarawak election.

SNAP Youth chief Dayrell Enterie said Anwar’s statement was “totally incorrect”.

This statement of his (Anwar) is totally incorrect as neither SNAP nor its president (who was erroneously named Stanley Jugol in the Malaysiakini article) had entered into any written agreement whatsoever on seat allocations with PKR.

Fortunately (or, one suspects, unfortunately) for Anwar, his claim was not that he had a formal understanding or a verbal agreement with SNAP regarding the allocation of seats, but that he had an agreement in writing. Therefore, this whole matter ought to be easy to clear up for Anwar – all he has to do is produce the written agreement and all will be well. Given SNAP’s flat denial of its existence, and given Anwar’s failure to produce the written agreement when he first claimed it existed, it is not difficult to guess whether or not Anwar is lying about this agreement.

More ominous than SNAP’s flat rebuttal of Anwar’s specific claim, though is the clear signal from SNAP that it is willing to walk away from Anwar and PKR, if necessary:

“SNAP wishes to reiterate that it is not a push-over party for any West Malaysian entity nor is SNAP a Pakatan stooge,” he said in a statement mailed to FMT.

These political troubles are anything but welcome for Anwar, who is trying together a bizarre coalition with disparate interests – almost none of which are any sort of good news for Western interests or for the ultimate fate of Democracy in Malaysia, especially given that Anwar has been apparently caught on a DNA test doing what the kids today refer to as “pulling a Dominique Strauss Kahn.”

It is hopeful that the political fissures now beginning to show will signal the beginning of the end for a man who mysteriously remains a cause célèbre among some of America’s hopelessly naïve elites. Anwar Ibrahim is lionized amongst the usual suspects in the United States because he was previously jailed on a sodomy charge, which was overturned in 2004. Lost in the wake of the celebration over Anwar’s release amongst these same people is the fact that Anwar was simultaneously convicted of corruption on a scale that would make William Jefferson, Duke Cunningham, and Edwin Edwards blush. This conviction was not overturned and in fact was upheld on appeal.Read more.
